Landfill Capping

Landfill Capping

Landfill Capping is basically the sealing of a landfill. It is containment technology at its finest and forms a barrier between the contaminated source and the surface. Over the years landfills have been the most common form of waste disposal, the capping is put in place to shield humans and the surrounding environment from the harmful effects of its contents by reducing its migration. Another purpose is to prevent the entry of precipitation (rain, hail, snow, etc.) and the escape of gas, odours and other emissions.

There are a vast range of geosynthetic products on the market that are more than sufficient to be used as an artificial sealing liner, with the main two been polymeric geomembranes and geosynthetic clay liners.

At EvansEnviron we mainly use HDPDE and LEPD Plastic for the purpose of capping, we can also use geosynthetic clay liners as the use of them for capping is increasing in the UK.

The most common types of polymeric geomembranes commercially available for capping are:

• high density polyethylene (HDPE);
• Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE);
• polypropylene (PP)

Geocomposite drainage layers are used on landfill capping construction as it has a proven record in this sector.

Although the construction of the geo-membrane liner typically provides an impermeable barrier, damage to the liner, in the form of small tears or punctures, could occur when the protective soil cover is placed over the liner, which will affect its reliability. EvansEnviron takes great care in all our work to avoid this scenario.

EvansEnviron undertake all types of capping construction from installing temporary and permanent capping to all capping repairs. These include pipe boots which are used to create a waterproof seal between the roof deck and protruding pipework and extruding tie in’s.
